Is a blog post really a blog post if, instead of a pithy topic, I write about what’s coming next on
my road of adventure? Sure it is! My blog::my rules! Besides, the non-writing parts of this career are just as much a part of the Writer’s Life as are the writey bits.
So much is happening, it is a little overwhelming. As you hopefully know, I have a new book coming out 4 June, titled Homeland Insecurity. To give you an idea of what that feels like, let me share with you a conversation I had a few weeks ago with Karen M. McManus, author of One Of Us Is Lying and a whole slew of other fantastic books.
Meeting Karen McManus
I was at the North Texas Teen Book Festival on Saturday, 27 April. Karen McManus, along with a bunch of other incredible writers were there giving talks, advice, greeting fans, and being their spectacular selves (we writers truly are a magnificent batch of human beings). When I let her know I was a writer, she took such an interest in my work and congratulated me on my upcoming release. I proceeded to ask her if new releases get any easier. She smiled in a knowing way and said, “You’re talking about the terror.”
She knew! Then, she went on to say "No, that fear for the newest baby set loose in the world never gets easier." Her next words were of support and reassurance, but underneath them lay the stark reality, releasing a book no matter what your past successes might be is a frightening affair. That’s exactly the stew I’m simmering in as I stare down the remaining 24 days, ten hours, and fifteen minutes until the release date. But hey! Who’s counting, right?
Wrong!
I’m counting! There is so much left to do and, while it may sound like a long time, it feels all too short. If life has taught me anything, it’s that the time will fly by and leave me standing at the side of the road asking, “What just happened?”
Writers are not what I or anyone else would label extroverts. We like to sit in our work-spaces, dream up endearing characters for readers to fall in love with, then run them through the ringer.I’m no different. Short version, we’re writers. I’m no different and, all things being equal, I’m posterboy for The Wallflower Society. And yet …
